MODIFIED UNION-CLASS DROPSHIP RED RIVER

HIGH ORBIT, SENDAI

BALDUR PREFECTURE, BENJAMIN MILITARY DISTRICT

DRACONIS COMBINE

23 JUNE 2798

Manny found Rafe in the same observation compartment. As before, he was looking out at the stars and Sendai slowly getting smaller.

Both battalions were tired and emotionally spent. Once Dojiro had been captured, the resistance collapsed. The militia’s ’Mechs and armor were destroyed or stripped for parts. All government buildings were razed, and firing squads executed the surviving governmental leaders. Dojiro himself was executed after a trial, the last act before the Light Horse lifted off. Now most were wrapped in grief or sleeping, but Rafe couldn’t sleep, not yet.

Manny stepped inside, uncertain of his reaction. They hadn’t spoken to each other since that lunch on Sendai, and she did not know what to expect. “Rafe?” she said. “The memorial service is starting in an hour.”

“Thank you.”

She fought the urge to leave. “Rafe?”

Rafe turned his head to look at her. A single tear ran down his left cheek. “I can cry now,” he said, more tears welling up in his eyes. “I can finally cry.”

With a wail, the tears came.

Before she was fully aware of it, Manny had already crossed the compartment and was holding Rafe in her arms. Her own tears started.

“Yes,” she breathed. “We can all cry now.”
